2024-25 Stamps Job Readiness and Mentorship Program Field Trip to Dallas, Texas : Inspiring Future Careers

Stamps, AR – On Thursday, July 11, 2024, students in the Stamps Job Readiness and Mentorship Program embarked on an exciting field trip to Dallas, Texas. This enriching journey was designed to broaden their horizons and introduce them to various professional fields, particularly in science and engineering.

The day began early, with students and chaperones departing Stamps at 4:30 AM. Their first stop was Buc-ee’s, where the students were amazed by the vast selection of food and merchandise. This initial visit provided a refreshing start to their day, setting the tone for the adventures ahead.

A significant highlight of the trip was the visit to EJES, Inc., a renowned engineering and consulting firm. The students met with the company’s owner, Mr. Edwin Jones, and his staff, gaining valuable insights into careers in civil engineering and business ownership. Mr. Jones shared his inspiring journey, motivating the students with his success story. They also had the opportunity to interact with staff members from various departments, including architecture, marketing, project management, and support roles. One of the most exciting moments was meeting the engineer responsible for the Stamps/Lewisville Watershed Project, showcasing the real-world applications of STEM careers. STEM refers to careers centered around science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

For many students, the visit to EJES, Inc. was an eye-opening experience. Although they expressed a strong interest in science and math, none had previously considered careers in engineering and architecture. The visit broadened their understanding of these fields and highlighted the impact of EJES, Inc.’s work across the Southern United States, including in Arkansas. The company’s generosity in providing transportation to and from Dallas, a book scholarship for one of the Class of 2024 high school graduates, nine $25 gift cards, and a catered lunch made the experience even more memorable and encouraging.

The day continued with a VIP Guided Tour of AT&T Stadium, in courtesy of Mr. Stephen Jones,  the CEO of the Dallas Cowboys. The students toured the stadium in style,, lead by their tour guide Mr. Dan. Where they explored various areas, including stops at the Pro Shop, the Main Club, a private suite, the Print Media Press Box, The Cotton Bowl Office vestibule, and the Dr Pepper Star Bar and  the Ford Motor Company Fountain. Students were then taken to the event level, where they saw the field, the Miller Lite Club, the postgame interview room, and both the Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders locker rooms. The tour concluded at the AT&T Stadium Pro Shop, where students also learned about the history of the Cotton Bowl and Mr. Jones’s ties to Arkansas and the University of Arkansas. This experience not only showcased the grandeur of professional sports but also underscored the importance of hard work and dedication in achieving success.

As the day drew to a close, the group made a final stop at the Galleria Mall. Despite heavy traffic, they enjoyed a couple of hours of shopping and dining, rounding off a day filled with learning and fun.

The field trip was a resounding success, providing the students with real-world examples of success and introducing them to role models who could relate to their experiences. The message of “Don’t drown in your tears” resonated deeply with the students, motivating them to pursue their career goals with renewed determination. The Stamps Job Readiness and Mentorship Program was a first year grant funded by Arkansas Department of Human Services Youth Services. The trip was a success.and everyone was thankful for the financial support of EJES, Inc., the Dallas Cowboys, Books From Bobby, Inc., TOBDOS, Upward Movement and 5GNews. Thanks is also extended  to the various mentors from all across the United States, and dedicated staff members committed to fostering the next generation of professionals.
